She was glad things were falling into place, just like they usually did. “Okay I'll meet you in the cafeteria at lunch time, oh and see if you can get Hinata to join us!” Her blue eyes had that natural sparkle to them, plans, friends, a dance, this would be a great year! Things just seem to keep getting better and better, and lunch would get a lot of details worked out. The only point of lunch in her ind was that it was a tie for talking to friends all in one place and making plans for the next day. The actual point of eating was more or less not important to her, she would eat eventually, when she was hungry or something. Ino rarely actually ate during lunch, it was more her social hour than a tie for food. She usually had a healthy snack after school before working out with volleyball.
“I'll see you at lunch pinkie! Later Naruto! Bye Sai!” She gave a short wave of her hand and blew her best friend a kiss. Turning on her heel, the blonde made her way down the hall. Satisfied with how the day was going so far. There was just one puzzle to sort out Sai, and during lunch she would get that all figured out. She had a lot to think about there was the school dance, and she had dance practice, and volleyball practice and so much more. Not that she was worried about doing more than she could handle. She enjoyed have a lot to fill her spare time, it was always intellectually and physically challenging.

After such a soul searching, heartfelt moment between himself and his friend, the bell just had to interrupt, calling blondes upon them like tigers to the scent of fresh meat. Actually, giving the situation a quick reassessment, his eyes widened a fraction as the realization set in that these two people, at this current time, were not favourable.
Yet, what stuck with him was this odd sense of comfort, which was trumping his worry. There were times he did not think very highly of Sakura. He sometimes doubted the title ‘friend’ was mutual between them, with all of her exasperation. Here, with tentative steps he reached out to her, he could see the anger. Something he envied of her was how, unless she was deliberately trying to hide it, her emotions were so open on her expressions. Whatever her thoughts were, they melted away, and he was once again shown that softness that had drawn him closer.
It was times like these that he was reminded of his friendship, instilling loyalty within him again, but a glance in Naruto’s direction made him wonder if he was being a bad one. Sakura had said yes, and she was confirming it so that Naruto knew too. He didn’t intend for it to be a secret for long, but he needed more information, and more preparation in order to explain his reasoning. It was why his smile this time, directed toward the girl, was one of his usual—perhaps even more cut off. The breakthrough his feelings had, even if small, retreated back.
“Just hope traffic that night isn’t too poor, or I’ll be sorely tempted we go on an evening stroll.” With that smile and that lace of amusement ringing in his tone, this was just another one of Sai’s little jokes that meant absolutely no harm.
While Ino’s presence should have been more problematic, she had bounded in and did her utterly female thing in a rush before she disappeared again into the hallways. What a stroke of luck she came in the latter half of Sakura’s conversation, which meant he wouldn’t have to decline her yet. Since Sakura said yes, the only reason he would defect to the other two was in the hands of the boy standing across from him—who he still didn’t quite make eye contact with.

"O-oh."
Uzumaki Naruto was at a loss for words.
Yes, he was aware that Sai and Sakura were friends, but... What the hell, Sai? Naruto didn't even like dances all that much, but if there was one person he wanted to go with, it was Sakura. The blonde didn't know if Sai even liked chicks, aside all he had ever heard the obsidian-haired boy say was a few offhand comments and a slew of penis jokes.
And Sai knew he liked her...
He bit his lip, fighting back the urge to do... something. Something stupid and impulsive that really wouldn't help his case at all.
So, the blonde closed his eyes and took a deep breath, and imagined something, anything that didn't involve pummeling his friend into a nice bloody pulp.
"Cool, cool. So I guess I'll see you there, then?" he said, forcing himself to smile. Even if they didn't go together, they could still hang out. And at least they were only going as friends rather than making a big date out of it to rub in his face... Or so he hoped, anyway.
School dances were dumb, he thought with an inward sigh. Besides, he and Sakura were going on that date later today. Well, that not-date. But still.
With the image of him and Sakura enjoying some of the best ramen in the world firmly in his minds' eye, he nodded to them both. "I gotta get going, but I'll see you guys later, right?" he half-asked, half stated, not really sure where he was going with this.
If he wasn't going with Sakura, that meant he should probably ask someone else, but who else would want to go with him? He turned his back to his friends, waving over his shoulder as he meandered somewhat dejectedly to his next class.
Well... Now what?

"My name is not Pinkie!" hissed Sakura, eyes watching the retreating back of the volleyball star. Honestly, she only tolerated 'Forehead' because that was her nickname when she was younger, but Pinkie? That was achieved another level on her 'don't-even' scale. Still fuming a little, Sakura offered Sai a nod and a small smile, "I refused to walk in high heels, as pleasant as a walk sounds." She was playing along with this comment, until a look of...something flashed across Naruto's face.
Haruno Sakura wasn't an idiot, nor was she completely blind or delusional.
Of course she knew that the blond standing next to her had feelings for her considering his many attempts to get her on a date with him. But it was just a puppy crush, wasn't it? Sakura didn't even know what to think anymore. Even if he forced a smile on his face, Sakura knew him well enough to know if it was genuine or not.
Shifting nervously on her other foot, Sakura gripped the strap of her bag tightly and offered a smile. "Of course we can still hang out. Sai and I are going as friends, that's all." Eyes glancing up to the large clock in the hallway, the pinkette allowed a groan to escape her lips at the mere thought of rushing to her pending doom next class.
"But, you know," Sakura's eyes met Naruto's, green meeting blue, "I'm sure I can save a dance for you. Anyways, I have to get to class, and you two do as well. See you later!" Breaking away from her small group, Sakura offered a wave before blending into the sea of people to get to her next classroom.
