Sai would have been quite content by his place at the fridge, drinking the currently borrowed can of juice and not at all involving himself in the complicated personal politics of late-night-shoppers. It did not matter that his young underclassman was being abused, and quite undeservedly so, by being forced in other peoples' business and company. As long as he could have his peace, that was all that mattered.
Unfortunately, he was on the job, and now his superior had stepped out from his hiding place. It would be difficult to explain why he was sitting there on the floor instead of properly watching over the store, so Sai pushed himself up and slowly moved back to the aisle where the action was happening.
He did not, however, say anything, merely hovering more than a few steps away, wondering if he could find a way to have Kankuro take over the watch and that he could slip to the back. He was, after all, far more sociable and even bore some connection to young Ryou.
With hesitance and low volume, Sai spoke out, “I'll just check out the back room for now...” And tried to, as inconspicuously as possible, pass onward. He had informed him of his intention and would hopefully have no objective thrown at him. Though he liked Naruto and Ryou, hormonal women and awkward scenes would only become worse with his presence. He didn't want to be anywhere near the frazzle-minded girl lest she turn insane and do unmentionable things to him. Ill people could be unpredictable like that.
