gender Male, though you may have to squint a little to tell.

occupation Teaching Assistant for the Art classes at Konoha High. He's also a bartender at Panic Paradise for extra cash while he tries to get more of his art shown at the local gallery. Artists have to eat too, y'know.

Physical Appearance
Despite his narcissism and ego, Deidara actually only stands at 5'5" while weighing in at 112 pounds. Not exactly a tall, intimidating figure of masculinity and strength. To be honest, the man doesn't seem very... manly at all, regardless of his raging objections when mistaken for a pretty girl. His hair is long and blond, falling past his shoulders even when drawn into the usual half-ponytail he ties it in. The bangs fall over his left eye and he never seems to care or deal with poor depth perception even with his reluctance to shift the fringe aside. His eyes, though the left is almost a rarity to glimpse, are somewhat slanted and almond-shaped while bearing a bright, bright blue. There also seems to be a black outline surrounding them. Eyeliner, perhaps? Oh, wouldn't you like to know? Blind as Deidara is to see it sometimes, he's androgynous. Not that he really makes any attempt at changing this or hiding his effeminate features. It just doesn't do wonders for a man's ego to be addressed like a lady.
Concerning physical stature, he's light-built, but muscular. A lean, slender man rather than stocky or bulky with copious amounts of brawn. His limbs are long, but not too lanky and his movements are often languid like a smug house cat. His body-language is usually relaxed, though can become expressive with gesticulations when he gets particularly involved in something. As a passionate individual, he likes getting his points across. Non-verbal communication offers the best medium to do so. His face usually offers expressions galore, though smirks and sly grins are most common for Deidara. Scowls and sneers, however, seem to be typical for him as well when his mood is shifted... as it so often is.
Personality
At first glance, it's easy to assume he's someone who's cool and laid-back. He likes to radiate that aura; the sense that he's got it all under control. To be honest, however, he's a very temperamental, egotistical man who is fairly easy to anger or annoy. Call him catty, really. But, despite his moody behavior, he does actually portray an attitude that's confident and relaxed. Most of the time, he tends to laugh at others who might try to find a way under his skin. He considers himself a genius artist and, as such, considers himself superior to the majority of the masses. Even when in casual conversation, he can find ways to slide in little smart-ass quips or cunning remarks to goad his company. Deidara does not feel the need to be too charismatic or charming. No, no. He figures that his personality is, in itself, a work of art. Why change something for people who don't even matter?
People tend to mistake his quick temper for incompetence. He can be immature now and then, but he usually seems to try and best anyone's assumptions on the matter. When part of a gang during his high school years, Deidara had actually been a fairly intelligent member of the group. Though impulsive and eager to stir up trouble, he had been smart enough to realize when it was time to fight, flee, or bide his time. This isn't to say he thinks things through completely, but he's clever enough to match wits with people higher up on the social ladder. He can be sly, cunning, and blunt.... usually depending on whatever mood you might find him in. When in a more "agreeable" mood, he tends to engage more in amused wit than in crude, unimpressed sarcasm. Either way, he usually as something insensitive to say. Not that he always means to provoke, mind you. Sometimes, he's merely more in the mood for games. Other times, he's just stating his opinion. His opinion, of course, usually appeals to his own talents rather than those he may come across.
Deidara also isn't a man who's easy to impress. He's quick to judge people and usually sticks with that label of them until proven otherwise. If he thinks you're an idiot, he'll probably continue to think so until there's solid evidence that might suggest a shred of intelligence. He's a bit of an asshole who finds amusement in mocking or teasing people he considers beneath him... which seems to be the majority. He is rarely impressed by someone's attitude, behavior, or insight unless it somehow appeals to his interests. He seems to scoff at people openly and often and isn't afraid to lecture them on how disappointing they are. Usually, he only reserves his fondness for fellow artists whom he deems "the only ones who understand his genius." But, even then, he's still very critical. Being wrapped up in his ego has him very skeptical concerning the abilities of others. It's a rare, rare moment where Deidara actually puts his trust in someone else. Really, if you want a job done right, do it yourself.
In essence, he's an independent, unimpressed, impulsive, egotistical man. Not exactly the picturesque image of a teacher, but he tends to blame most of his behavior on the students he interacts with. In fact, he has even blown up a toilet and blamed it on one of the juniors, not that he enjoyed doing so. He would prefer it if his "art" was something he could take credit for. Considering his role, however, he must do what he can to preserve his occupation. For now, anyway. Usually, he's just one to act impulsive with his words and opinions. He's insenstive, blunt, and moody; someone who could almost be considered as rash and temperamental as some of the students. But, of course, he also radiates a sense of confidence that is cool and clever. With his various quirks, one of the most noticeable would have to be his habit of grunting "un" or "mm" after he speaks. When asked about it, he doesn't even seem aware that he does so. Really, he's just someone who personalizes everything he does. A true artist indeed. He's unorthodox and he knows it. In fact, he takes pride in it.
Strengths
Confident -- Though some have pointed out that he may be over-confident, Deidara has yet to figure this might be a bad thing. He's quite sure of himself and isn't afraid to let it be known. He won't shy away from people or portray meek, tentative behavior. He's confident in himself, in his art, and in his teaching prowess. Yup, he just figures he's cool and he knows it.
Intelligent -- In spite of being the subject of many "dumb blond" jokes, this man does have a clever head on his shoulders. He can read people well and, in very rare cases, distribute respect to his fellow artists (though he still considers his own work to be superior). He's observant and good at keeping track of how others react and is definitely not a bimbo, no matter what silly rumors may have declared otherwise. His intelligence has also helped with his creativity, leading him to sculpt and teach with methods just outside the box.
Passionate -- Deidara is an enthusiastic man. When it comes to art (yes, especially art), he considers himself an expert and a genius. His eyes light up when he's found thriving in his element; truly an artist who delights in his realm of creativity. Though he may radiate a sense of egotistical pride that seems to make him aloof, he genuinely seems to adore the subjects that interest him.
Artistic -- There's a reason he's a teaching assistant fresh out of art school. Deidara really is an artist and, well, he'll make sure you don't forget it. He sees everything as different variations of art and judges them as such. He thinks in a creative sense despite crude words he may share and he takes his own artwork very seriously. He takes all art very seriously. He considers his own work superior, of course, but he has a good eye for creativity.
Flaws
Arrogant -- Indeed, the man's confidence certainly gets the better of him sometimes. Because he's aware of his intelligence and artistic genius, he certainly shows arrogant tendencies. In his eyes, his art and his methods are superior to any other styles or theories. Though he may admit to respecting another artist for their skills, he'll always consider his own far better. He believes he's always right and can become annoyed when someone claims otherwise.
Insensitive -- Whoever said all artists were sensitive souls clearly didn't take many people into account. One such person would be Deidara, who doesn't really give much of a damn about other people. He'll easily mock, goad, or insult someone without a care in the world. Even when teaching classes, he's a bit blunt with the students and certainly won't be afraid to point out if someone can't draw, paint, or sculpt for shit. He sees no reason to care about things that don't concern him.
Impulsive -- True to his philosophy about art, he lives in the moment. In his perspective, art -- beauty -- is only meant to last for a brief flash in time. Following suit, he usually acts on impulse and doesn't care that he does. If Deidara sees a window of opportunity for something that appeals to his interests, he'll take it, no matter the means or the cost. He'll do whatever he pleases if the moment calls for it.
Temperamental -- As much as he tries to act cool and collected, he's fairly easy to set off sometimes. He's easy to annoy and has the bad habit of overreacting to things should the right buttons be pushed. Quick to anger, his mood can lash out at people for reasons that others might not understand. To him, it'll always make sense or be justified... even when, clearly, he can be unreasonably moody.
Drink? Why not? He likes strong shots. Gives him that "kick."
Smoke? Not really. Tried it at University, but it didn't really stick.
Drive? He owns a yellow Suzuki motorcycle, though heavy traffic usually persuades him to walk.
Drugs? Nah. He's an artistic genius all on his own.
Partying? It depends on his mood, but he's usually all for a wild party or two.
Family He has no family in the area and the only one who shares his flat is a betta fish, Katsu.
Residence Deidara's actually quite fond of his studio apartment. Though often cluttered with various bits of clay artwork, sketches for more designs, and other random things, he seems to find all of this comfortable and fitting for a cozy getaway.
History
Deidara's beginnings were simple enough. He was raised as an only child by a single mother who worked a full-time job. Because of this, he learned to take care of himself at an early age. He never asked what happened to his father, or chose to care much at all. Instead, he contented himself with finding ways to amuse himself whenever he was home alone. At first, he tried his hand at drawing. Enjoyable, yes, but... not enough. Painting? Nah, nah... Nothing seemed to fit. When he was seven, however, his mother bought him play-doh for his birthday. He would spend hours molding and shaping the play-doh into various shapes, sizes, animals, and objects. He took it with him to school, to the park, to the beach... everywhere. Easily enough, his young mind deduced that he really liked sculpting things. So, naturally, he turned his attention to better mediums. He would buy clay for himself with extra money his mother would give him for an allowance. When in school, he thrived in art classes and often brought home many of his works to place throughout the apartment. But, upon beginning high school, he realized that even this -- creating clay masterpieces -- was not enough to satisfy his interests.
The start of his freshman year had him overly eager to find that one "thing" that would perfect his art. It was then that he hung around after school to see if he could find inspiration and, instead, found the allure of gang life. It was a small, but rebellious group of teens with a wild streak that appealed to Deidara's curiosity. Though he initially refused their recruiting advances, he gave in when he realized the opportunities this might offer him. The violence itself wasn't even that unnerving. His sole purpose for joining the group was to develop his artwork into something truly exciting... even controversial, if he could manage it. His schoolwork suffered, of course, and he nearly dropped out all together if it wasn't for his mother's constant guilt-tripping. So, between reluctantly improving on his school attendance (and work ethic) and trying to help out with the gang's turf war, he tried to figure out what was truly best for himself. In the end, he managed to disband from the gang. It wasn't an easy task, of course, but the leader had been killed in a fray and everyone else seemed to adopt an "every man for himself" mentality. So, with his time and focus cleared up, Deidara managed to graduate. His brief experience with this side of life, however, influenced his strange interests for the beauty in what is sudden and brief.
Upon this commencement, he was also granted a scholarship to the Tokyo University of the Arts. Despite his questionable ties with the gang in his hometown, the prestigious university had noticed his work ethic when applied to the many clay creations he had molded. Not only that, but his art was unique and quick to attract attention. All the more smug and confident, Deidara packed up and moved out for the university dorms. For the most part, his life there was easy. There was hard work to be done, plenty of sculpting, and a few parties in between. It was here, as well, that he found himself finally addressing his sexuality. Throughout high school, he'd only had girlfriends. He hadn't really enjoyed it as much as some of the other boys had, however. His girlfriends had been whiny, clingy, and demanding. Though aware that this didn't represent all of the female population, Deidara wasn't too impressed to begin with. Within the first year of his university studies, he found himself lusting after his roommate who was, in fact, male. He did so over a period of weeks until, somehow, they found themselves tangled in bed together. It didn't turn into a relationship, but it did alert Deidara to his own sexual preferences.
Throughout his time at the university, he continued to impress with his natural sculpting skills. Still, though, he seemed to consider something lackluster. Frustrated as to why, he became more moody and hard to please. He did grow closer to a friend of his who dabbled in pyrotechnics at the local theatre when he spent more time roaming about the city, trying to inspire himself. He found he was enamored with some of the flashy, explosive things his friend could create. So, being an impulsive college guy, he tried to mix this "art form" with his own. Upon doing so, he created his masterpiece -- exploding art. Not that he could go anywhere with it or anything, but it seemed to please the selective, frustrated artist inside him. He was encouraged to keep to molding clay and nothing else. Making bombs was rather frowned upon in society, after all. Annoyed by the "lack of vision" that plagued his superiors, he grew to form bitter bonds with everyone at the school. He considered dropping out in the middle of his last year, wanting to free himself of those who would try and restrain his talents. At that point, though, he realized that this would be a stupid endeavor, and stayed to graduate.
He received his degree and tried formulating plans to travel, hoping to find a better place to develop his artistic skills. Money, however, was a problem. Not only that, but he was encouraged to consider going to graduate school to have a better chance at getting a good job and pursing a career more to his liking. But, due to his resentment toward the university, he did what he could to steer clear of this option. Fortunately, he was approached with a job offer by a local high school. He had dropped in once or twice at Konoha High while carrying on with his first two years at university, having shown interest in the neglected art department. Now that he had graduated (and with marks that, all in all, weren't too shabby), he was encouraged to help out as a teaching assistant. Though the role certainly hadn't been one he'd predicted seeing himself in (fuck, kids were annoying), he needed the money and it might give him a chance to spread his thoughts and self-proclaimed genius to others.
Now he finds himself in his first year teaching at Konoha High, which he doesn't seem to mind too much (though complains about often enough). He also snagged a job as a bartender at Panic Paradise in the Roppongi district during the weekends. He might not be exactly where he wants to be in his life, but he's eager to change that once he can. For now, he just has to keep from screwing it all up so as not to hinder himself further.
No big surprise

What makes your character (or interpretation of the character) unique, original, and worth having on the site? I'd like to hope that Deidara will bring further amusement to the forum with his judgmental attitude, insensitivity, and temperamental moments of PMS-like aggression. I wanted to bring in some kind of teacher, seeing as it's always good to have a few "figures of authority," though Deidara doesn't really fit the mold of some strict, stuffy adult. He does want to "mold" young minds, but he's still Deidara... Still impulsive, easy to anger, and unimpressed with boundaries. I just think it might be fun to see how he interacts with all these lovely characters. Plus, it's always fun to add in another arrogant asshole into the mix.
Role Play Sample
Another day. Yes, that's right. Today was just another day. Deidara snorted to himself. Dull, boring, bland, mediocre. He was not exactly fond of how typical this all felt; of how he could easily predict what would happen next in his routine. Today was one of his days to teach the Grade 9 classes and, sadly, he had actually expected to be this disappointed. From the teacher's desk at the front of the arrangement of tables where the students were seated, the blond seemed to droop in visible vexation. A scowl was broadening along the curvature of his mouth and his eyelids had lowered halfway in distinct lack of interest. This was pathetic. This was boring. This was ugly. And this most certainly was not art. Didn't kids have creativity anymore? Apparently not. But he already knew that.
Suddenly, he banged his fist on the desk and stood. The students looked up, puzzled by the spontaneity of the noise and movement. Deidara merely continued to scowl as he reached over to scoop up one of the small, clay bowls one of the girls had been sculpting. "What... What is this?" he asked her in an unimpressed drawl, eyebrow raised expectantly as he stared down at her. The girl blinked up at him for a moment before managing a confused, "It's... a bowl?" To this, though, the TA curled his lip in disdain. "No. This is a waste of clay, un. I told you to be creative.... and this is what you come up with? A plate with the uneven edges turned up?" He returned the haphazard attempt to the girl by dropping it unceremoniously in front of her hands, grunting in bemused indifference when a few pieces broke off. One of the boys sitting across from the girl at the table, however, snorted with repressed laughter. Deidara caught on and was not amused.
"Isn't that all a bowl is, Iwakura-sensei?" The freshman seemed to ask this innocently, but there was the trace of a smirk curling one side of his mouth. Of this, Deidara was also aware. His own expression seemed blank and his eyes -- well, the visible one -- was fixed on the smug student as he felt a vein twitch somewhere in his temples. "This bowl... This assignment that I've requested of you is supposed to be art..." The blond's voice was surprisingly calm, but with a hint of danger lying in wait beneath the surface. The student seemed aware of this and sunk slightly in his seat, beginning to feel uncomfortable beneath the young TA's intense stare. "If I had asked for your definition of a bowl, Teru, I would have asked for one. But, as it turns out, mm..." Deidara loomed closer, bending slightly at the waist to look the seated boy in the eye. "...This is art. Art." Again, there was almost a hidden threat swathed somewhere in the unimpressed tone of the man's voice.
For a minute, it seemed, Deidara's blue eye was focused on the student's unnerved face. He wanted to get his point across. Since he couldn't do so in a manner he would have found much more persuasive, this method would have to do. Sometimes, he wondered as to why he even put up with this job... or offered to take it in the first place. Day in and day out, he dealt with bratty kids and stuffy teachers who were supposed to be his "respected colleagues." Tch. Old people were so easily offended. And the kids? They were just annoying. Amusing at times, but usually far too obnoxious to have him considering otherwise.
Feeling his point had been made well enough as he noticed Teru squirming slightly in his seat, he straightened up and moved back to the front of the class. "This is hopeless, un. I'm having you sculpt animals next class. Maybe then, you'll stop thinking so literally." Deidara moved his hand in a dismissive wave, the other kneading at his temples before he sat again and made to jot a few notes down in his booklet. The students simply nodded and went back to work for the rest of the period. The blond artist, however, didn't seem completely at ease. Teru's smartass remark was going to annoy him for the rest of the day, wasn't it? It would... until he found a way to set the kid's backpack on fire while he was at lunch. Mm. Perhaps then, he'd feel a bit more content.
