Physical Appearance Standing at 5'4.5", Ryou is rather short for his age. With a slight build, he only weighs about 120 pounds, with very little fat and no muscle beyond what is average. He's fairly slim-looking but otherwise unremarkable. In fact, the most remarkable thing about him are his eyes, deep hazel with soft green on the inside and dark brown that almost looks black on the very outer edge. They're distinct eyes, wide and sweet and childish-looking on a fair-skinned face. They give him the inherent trait of looking like an almost-irresistible, innocent puppy.
And if such an innocent puppy ever transformed into a human, it would have to be Ryou. Even his dark, spiky black hair (which would seem completely unfitting to his introverted personality) seems to droop when he's sad and perk up when he's excited, though perhaps that's merely a trick of the eye. Sometimes his mannerisms match up, too -- tilting his head in innocent confusion, trailing uncertainly behind someone who's leading him as if he's a little lost.
In the clothing department, Ryou tends to wear bland, solid-colored shirts -- usually black or white, though he's been seen in darkish red, green, and sometimes dark gray-brown. At school, he's almost always in a black t-shirt. Both in and out of school, the coverage of his lower half falls strictly under the responsibility of khaki cargo shorts or blue jeans, depending on the weather. All in all, he's remarkably unremarkable.
Personality When one meets Ryou, one probably doesn't think much of him, looking at him and seeing an overly shy, socially awkward freshman who's way too innocent to be a teenager. It's all true -- he's incredibly timid, and has never been able to socialize comfortably. Because he's so withdrawn, he hasn't had the opportunity to see the seedy side of society, so he could be called innocent -- although it's more an inherent trait than a preserved sense of purity.
That's not to say he's ignorant of the sex, drugs, drinking, death and jaywalking that go on in society. He just isn't very exposed to it, and would rather it remain that way.
If one were to say "hello" to Ryou, his initial response would be complete uncertainty. He has a very hard time determining how to react to things when he's feeling nervous, and conversations with people he doesn't know make him nervous. He's used to not being noticed in any significant way to the point that he has no idea how to react to it.
He's used to being referred to as the teacher's pet and things of that nature by those who bother referring to such an ineffectual, quiet person at all, but his regular companions are few and far, far between. With the few he does talk to occasionally, he's incredibly reserved and awkward. To one or two people he may come across as a stuck-up prick due to his tendency to avoid people and be very quiet -- but then, he doesn't really look the part.
When it comes to conflict, Ryou tends to escape any situation that smells of it as soon as physically possible. I mean, if he's that nervous about simple social interactions, you can't honestly expect him to stand his ground in the face of strife, can you? He doesn't, at any rate -- whether he's directly involved or not, he makes a point of keeping his nose out of it or getting out of it as soon as he can. Not like it matters very much -- he's succeeded thus far in worming or weirding his way out of any groups of friends or peers, the latter not on purpose, and he's not really the type to make enemies.
Outside of social interactions, Ryou is extremely meticulous, obsessing with precision in everything he does -- be it drawing for fun, math homework, or keeping his roast duck from getting rice on it. While a good thing at time, this perfectionism can also make him come across as having high standards for people -- which he doesn't. (It's more a result of his parents and brother having high expectations of him than it is a natural trait, but it's a part of him now.)
He tends to worry a lot -- he doesn't know half the meaning of "take it easy," and when he tries to take it easy, his mind usually comes up with something completely irrational and unlikely for him to be concerned about. Even with nothing to worry about, he finds something to worry about.
Strengths He's book-smart, with a keen interest in all his schooling (he even pays attention to the boring parts). He takes jokes and light-hearted teasing in stride, partly because he's too shy to do anything about it.
Flaws Most notably, he's socially inept, understanding the social system to a point, but unable to really function in it. He doesn't stand up for himself when he's being teased or bullied, and tends to be flighty if he senses conflict. His shyness and reservedness make him hard to get to know -- almost impossible, in fact, because he weasels his way out of every opportunity to socialize in existence if it's possible -- and sometimes it makes him hard to get along with, or he comes across as a prick. Not that it's very hard -- the kids in his grade all think of him as the teacher's pet (that is, the ones that think of him very much at all). He worries about nothing, which is just plain unhealthy.
Smoke? Ew.
Drive? And risk, you know, dying? Death by poor driving skills. That's not what he wants written on his tombstone.
Drugs? Illegal and unappealing.
Partying? He might try to escape out the window.
Family Takezo Hideaki (father), Takezo Hiroko (mother), Takezo Junpei (20-year-old brother)
Residence He lives in a good-sized apartment about 20 minutes from the school with his parents.
History Ryou's life has been very simple, lived with a loving mother and brother in their small apartment. His father, a businessman, was and is almost constantly absent. Despite this, Hideaki has always had a heavy influence on his sons' lives. Unfortunately for Ryou, he's usually the odd one out, getting less attention than his ambitious brother. He never resented it, and they became very close.
His social life was always fairly nonexistent -- as a small child in early primary school, his teachers were often in contact with his mother -- not because he was a problematic child, but because his social skills were so lacking. Ryou was a naturally shy boy, you see, and that timidness had been reinforced by his brother being the only person he really talked to. He was never made to speak to anyone outside of his family and, sometimes, his teachers. Hiroko, unsure of how to handle the situation but doing her best, arranged for a playdate with another young boy in his class, Tenshi Masaru.
It was probably the best thing she could've done, the best person she could've asked. Masaru was a warm, affable, outgoing, persistent fellow; as soon as he decided he wanted to befriend the young Takezo, the boy never stood a chance. Ryou never stopped feeling awkward around him, but they became best friends anyway.
When the teachers saw him talking quietly to Masaru on school days, they laid off a bit. He was still incredibly shy and didn't have very many friends, but Masaru made him hang around with a few other people, too, even if they didn't talk that much.
During early summer right after their eighth grade graduation, Masaru's father was transferred in the company he worked in; he had to move if he wanted to keep his job. They packed up, and Ryou had lost his best friend before the end of summer. Since then, the few people he talked to other than Masaru split off a bit, going their separate ways.
No big surprise

What makes your character (or interpretation of the character) unique, original, and worth having on the site? He's uniquely normal and unusually shy (to say the least). In character, he'd make for...interesting interactions (or lack thereof).
Role Play Sample
Why do I need so many pencils?
With the meticulous care that was characteristic of him, he slipped the bundle of pencils held together by a bright yellow rubber band into the pocket of his backpack, zipping it closed gently as he went through his mental checklist. Paper pack, three-by-fives, pencils...folders...erasers? Tilting his head, he looked over his shoulder at the desk where an unopened three-pack of the big rubber erasers lay. He grimaced, grabbing it and prying at the edge of the package.
Do they make these childproof on purpose? he wondered rhetorically. Not that he was a child or something -- these packages just seemed to be really, really hard to open. "Childproofing," he laughed inwardly, finding a sense of humor he'd picked up from his best friend, "makes things difficult for children and impossible for everyone else."
With a sigh, he slung his backpack on his shoulders and went out to the kitchen to find scissors. As soon as he stepped in the room, he smelled the lingering scent of bacon and eggs, and glanced over to where his mother was sitting at their table quietly, writing. "Mom, why did you buy me so many pencils?" he asked as he reached into the drawer for the objective of his little adventure.
"You do have the tendency to lose them," the dark-haired woman stated dryly, not looking up. He smiled slightly. That was true. So did the rest of the family.
"But...eight pencils for the first day?" He cast her a doubtful glance. He didn't think he could lose that many pencils if he tried. Or...not in a day, anyway.
With a small, triumphant, slightly hidden smile, he pulled the package open, the erasers falling into his palm.
