Physical Appearance Standing at 5'6" and weighing about 120 pounds, Neji is by no means thickly built. This belies his wiry strength, a result of a constant need to better himself in all aspects of his life. With a rather slim body and smooth, almost effeminate features, in the right light he can almost be mistaken for a girl; albeit a very surly, sourfaced girl. This is aided in part by the length of his hair; as is usual in his family, he has let it grow long, and ties it in a low ponytail just below his shoulders. It is a deep, dark brown; almost black in some lights; for perfectly heterosexual reasons, he takes impeccable care of his hair and becomes very angry if it is pulled or made dirty. Also a family trait, and one that makes his lineage immediately obvious, are his eyes; both iris and pupil are a pale shade of warm lavender. They would be rather beautiful if he wasn't scowling all the time.
Personality The epitome of all that the Hyuga family stands for, Neji is what some would call a natural genius; he seems to live a charmed life, quickly excelling at almost everything he tries his hand at. With an IQ well surpassing the majority of his peers and an ego roughly the size of a small planet, Neji has something of a superiority complex and is quick to judge those around him. He has little patience for others, particularly those with a reputation for trouble-making or unintelligence. While he may feign authority, the truth is that Neji has found himself constantly uncertain in social situations, and it is possible that his caustic attitudes are a defense mechanism to prevent him from feeling awkward. He was brought up being taught that children should be seen and not heard, and has become rather quiet and reserved as a result, only opening up to a select few (and highly rare) individuals.
Most of all, Neji is distressed by the apparent lack of control he appears to have over his life; his view on this is somewhat contradictory. On one hand, he is very fatalistic, believing that everyone must simply accept their destiny without trying to fight it; on the other hand, he is clearly unimpressed with his lot in life, and constantly fights against what he considers to be the things that stand in his way. In many ways, Neji's development as a teenager has been stunted; his adolescence was more turbulant than most, with the death of his father fresh in his mind just as he entered high school, and since this event he has found few whom he can gain closure with, preferring to simply close himself off to friendship altogether. When he considers himself wronged, he can be incredibly bitter, and holds a grudge to rival most. In truth he is a very lonely boy but his pride prevents him from ever reaching out to others for any form of help.
He is also a great upholder of rules and order (also known as a fun-sponge) and is quick to call someone out when they have decided to do something stupid/dangerous/illegal. While not necessarily polite, he is certainly very formal, and always refers to those around him with the appropriate suffixes. In particular, he is courteous towards women; not because he necessarily likes them. Actually, like many traditional Japanese men he sees women as fairly insignificant, but nonetheless delicate beings, and feels as if he should take it easy on them. This has lead to a small fraction of the school's female population to believe he's simply hiding a heart of gold under his mask of ice, and that it's just a matter of working to get closer to him; these girls are frequently disappointed. Somewhere along the line, a girl mentioned to one of her friends that she thought he might be gay, and after she mentioned it to one of her friends and she to one of hers, the rumour began to circulate around the school. Once it came back to Neji, he vehemently denied it, and does to this day. Deep down, however, he's aware that the rumour is actually true; not that he's able to ever express it in any way, for fear of destroying his credibility once and for all.
Strengths
Intelligence - Nobody can argue that Neji is not intelligent; in fact, he's been top of nearly every class he's attended since he started school. This is reflected in his impeccable grades and something of a teacher's pet status; he's often favoured in academic situations, and was made a prefect at the beginning of the year in recognition of his accomplishments at school.
Maturity - Neji is a very independent young man and is very mature for his age. He often finds it easier to communicate with adults than with his peers, and is often entrusted with positions of responsibility or leadership. This also enables him to avoid petty squabbles and other typically teenage problems. Also referred to as 'being boring'.
Drive - Part of what makes Neji so successful is his incredible drive to excel in all that he attempts. This combined with his natural abilities means that he improves at new tasks in very little time, and also means that he continues to keep previously learned skills sharpened with constant practise. Because of this, he hates to lose, and can be extremely competitive.
Flaws
Self-centered - Neji has not become a genius without it going to his head in more ways than one. He can be insensitive and callous to others, not really seeing why he should care when he considers his own dilemmas to be more pressing. Worse still, he does this intentionally, knowing full-well that it is hurtful and simply not caring. He is also prone to shows of arrogance.
Obstinate - Knowing that he is intelligent, he is always sure that his decision is the best, and is loathe to accept anyone else's suggestion, particularly if he sees them as being intellectually inferior. In addition, he is certainly never happy to admit it when he is wrong, or when someone else turns out to have one-upped him.
Prudish - Prudence is one thing, and is actually quite a good quality; but to be a prude to the extent that Neji is can be simply embarrassing. He looks down terribly on the majority of his generation and has no time whatsoever for frivolity, particularly where the opposite sex are concerned. As a result, he is incredibly repressed, and utterly refuses to act on any sexual impulse he might have.

Residence Neji resides most reluctantly with his uncle and younger cousins in an admittedly very fancy penthouse apartment in an upper-class area of town; however, in typical teenage boy fashion, he generally refuses to speak to any of the other family members and prefers to hole himself up in his room alone.
History When Neji was born, his mother was already becoming ill, and he was only an infant when she died later that year of heart complications. Being raised by a single father, particularly one who was incredibly involved with the family business and generally had little time for him, Neji often craved attention as a child, and it was from this that he rose to academic excellence, seeking to impress his father with his grades from the day he started school. His closest family members were undoubtedly his uncle, Hiashi, and younger cousin Hinata, who he saw often; Hiashi was very fond of him owing to his already impressive intelligence, and Hinata looked up to him as something of a big-brother figure, as at this time she was an only child.
Everything changed when Neji was thirteen, and his father suffered a fatal car accident on his way home from work. Hizashi had not died on impact; however, his internal injuries were such that he was not expected to last much longer. After having this hurriedly explained to him by a nurse over the phone, Neji was escorted by taxi to the hospital; just in time to hear his father's heart monitor flatline as the life support was turned off. Hiashi, who had been closer to the hospital when the accident occurred, had made the decision to allow his brother a natural death, rather than prolonging his suffering. This was not really possible to explain to Neji; he positively fled the ICU and went back down to the taxi, and ordered himself to be taken home immediately.
Sometimes he wonders what would have been if he had gone into the room even after he knew his father was gone; but rather than acknowledging it as his own decision, he mentally placed the blame on his uncle, holding him responsible for both his father's death and the fact that he was never able to say goodbye. However, only a few days later (admittedly just in time, as he was running out of food in the cupboard), he was contacted by the executive of his father's will and told that he was to be entrusted to his uncle and would move in with him as soon as possible.
Like most teenagers, Neji believed that he knew better and could look after himself given that his father's money had been left mainly to him; but the court disagreed, and he moved in with Hiashi not long afterwards. Still clearly bitter, he has failed to resolve his issues with his uncle; worse still, he has projected his dislike of Hiashi onto his daughters as well, and finds himself unable to keep from pointing out their faults wherever possible; which, of course, is wrong, but a part of him is not even aware of this, as where his family is concerned he often totally loses sight of what is right or wrong. However, some part of him is painfully conscious of his terrible behaviour; for the most part, he shuts himself up in his room when he is at 'home' and focuses intently on his studies, planning to move out as soon as he finishes school.[/SIZE]

What makes your character (or interpretation of the character) unique, original, and worth having on the site? I believe that my interpretation of the character steers well clear of the common mistake of romanticising a character who is clearly a jerk. Furthermore, I believe that the rest of you are all having far too much -- what's the word? -- fun here, and I want to bring you all down with my giant stick in the mud.
I also wanted to play a far less enlightened Neji; he's just so much more fun when he still hates everything. P:

Generally speaking, he had very few problems. The occasional complaint or loss of a case, the lateness of a pay-cheque... it all came with the territory when one worked in prosecution. However, since he worked so close to his family, in an environment that was very much biased toward him (for some reason, the reputation he seemed to hold around Hyuga Inc. made a few of the interns shrink from him behind their clipboards), little went wrong that couldn't be fixed by a call to his uncle. He was living the dream, so to speak; he had a sizeable income that was enough to keep him comfortably housed in a penthouse apartment across the road from Hyuga Inc. -- the one, in fact, that his father Hizashi had lived in until the day of his death. He owned a car that he didn't need to use a lot of the time, could easily afford to eat well... with a reasonable chunk of his inheritance still sitting idle in the bank, he had precious little to worry about financially.
Money, however, could not buy happiness; very occasionally he was forced to remember this. It was not to say that Neji was sad -- simply that he wasn't happy. There was nothing wrong with the way he lived, so there was no rationality for this. Nonetheless, he found himself once again casting his mind to the things he didn't have. When he did this, he felt like a spoiled brat, so he tried not to do it (even though he was probably a spoiled brat however you looked at it). It was times like these that he thought of his father, and when the grudge he had once borne towards his uncle and cousins skulked back into his mind, like a dog that had rolled in something revolting and was now petitioning to be stroked. Oh, stop it. I am not that person any more.
He considered, for a moment, calling Hinata or Tenten. He realised he didn't want to talk to either of them. At times like these, quite honestly, he didn't want to talk to anyone. He wanted to be alone, and at home to nobody. So, probably rather unintelligently, he left his cellphone on the counter and walked out the door. He did not want to be conveniently close to work, he thought, as he saw the high rise corporate building his family worked in staring down at him through the windscreen of his car. He changed gear, turned, and headed off around the corner, resolving to ignore the idea of work altogether.
It was unlike him to avoid a problem rather than facing it directly -- and also uncharacteristic of him to leave the house without his cellphone -- but he supposed that this late at night, nobody would bother to contact him anyway. If they did... well, he had voicemail for a reason.
At first he did not know where he was driving, but this feeling of lack of direction disconcerted him, so he resolved that he was going to take himself out for dinner. Someone wiser might have been able to tell him that going out for dinner on your own was rather pathetic; unfortunately, he was the only person in the car.
He had often been apprehensive about the Roppongi district, since its reputation had once been less than savoury. He was hopeful, however, that nobody would come looking for him here -- though he wasn't trying terribly hard not to be found -- and that, more importantly, nobody he knew would run into him. He chose a fairly quiet jazz club eventually, figuring he could handle a few drunk people as long as nobody threw up on him. Gazing dispassionately around, he took a seat at the bar and tried to work out what he could drink that wouldn't prevent him from driving home safely. Reasonably certain that lemonade wouldn't cause his liver to break down, he took a moment to notice that there was live music playing; a piano, mounted on a low platform near the back, illuminated in blue light. This didn't mean much to him right now.
What's wrong with you, Neji?
He shook his head. Everyone had been saying he needed to get out for a while anyway.
